WHAT ARE SECURITY TECHNOLOGIES?

I am certain that when security technologies are mentioned, we all think of alarm and camera systems that notify us of a burglary, fire, or the entry of an unwanted guest. Aside from a few technical professionals, most people do not even consider access control systems that can limit entry to a certain level or barrier systems for automobiles. For this reason, it occurs to no one that electrical systems—which occupy the most space in our lives—also need security systems, just like the measures taken to block an uninvited guest.

As can be clearly seen, security systems in the world are built upon notification. In other words, they warn the user about an unauthorized entry or a fire that may occur in a building and ensure that relevant persons or units take action. What if security systems were designed not to notify, but to actually prevent the thief from entering or the fire from starting?

Of course, everyone would prefer prevention over notification. I do not know if inventions related to this will be made in security systems, but if you look at it, the situation is not much different in electricity. When you look at protective equipment such as switches, fuses, or residual current devices (RCDs), they function similarly to security systems—but in a more primitive way—by cutting off the energy to make you aware of the problem. Sometimes, due to incorrect applications, fire incidents can even occur before the energy is cut.

To change the trends in this field, a change in mindset is required first. For example, an RCD cuts the energy flow by tripping above 30mA so that you are not killed by a shock when there is a leakage in a metal-bodied device. Another product, known as a neutral-ground regulator, ensures the system continues its energy flow without problems by preventing the formation of leakage on the metal body in the first place. While the RCD is mandatory in regulations, the neutral-ground regulator is not.

In another example, there is an even more dire situation. In electrical grids, constant flickers can occur, as was most recently seen in Bursa for a duration of 3.5 hours. At the simplest level, these can cause malfunctions in electronic boards and devices, or at worst, start a fire. Although regulations include surge suppressors among protective measures to prevent this situation, energy can still be supplied to the system due to a lack of inspection. If a loss of life occurs—the most painful recent example being the Aladağ tragedy—those responsible are sentenced to between 8 and 12 years.

We will all see how the trends in security technologies will evolve in the future world. But there is something we know: just as it is important to notify someone of a problem like a fire, it is equally important to take measures that prevent the fire from starting at all.

Simple precautions sometimes save lives. The best investment we can make for our family, our business, and our environment is protective measures. With Trimbox and GNDSeries, you can be protected from electricity-related damages and resulting electrical fires.
