POWER SUPPLY FAILURES

Power supplies, or UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supplies) for short, can be of literally vital importance, especially when we look at their intended purpose—even though they are often used for reasons far beyond why they were originally designed.

UPS systems are essential devices for any system that cannot tolerate even an instantaneous power interruption. They must be used in locations where a momentary power cut could cause serious material or moral costs, such as life support units, operating rooms, banks, ATMs, computers, and call center telephone exchanges. Even if these facilities have generators, a UPS is particularly necessary because it bridges the gap during the time it takes for a generator to kick in.

However, when we look at the actual usage areas of UPS systems, we see them being used even on industrial machinery. Installing a UPS on a machine is, to put it mildly, a sign of technical ignorance. Beyond that, it is an unnecessary and costly practice that creates redundant harmonic distortions in systems and contributes to environmental pollution.

UPS systems are often marketed for the purpose of preventing electrical fluctuations, which is outside their design scope. In fact, UPS batteries themselves are adversely affected by voltage fluctuations, which shortens their lifespan. In the event of a lightning strike, the UPS itself can burn out, making extra costs inevitable.

Alongside the uninterruptible energy technology they provide, let’s examine the common malfunctions UPS systems experience under a few headings:

  • The UPS is emitting a continuous warning signal.

This means the main power supply has been cut and the battery is about to run out. You should check if the UPS is plugged into the socket and ensure the circuit breaker it is connected to is active.

  • The UPS shuts down very quickly when the power goes out.

Despite the technology they bring, UPS systems are devices with extra maintenance costs because their batteries do not last forever. In such a case, the UPS battery needs to be replaced.

  • The UPS signals low battery very quickly after a power cut, even though we recently replaced the batteries.

If you are sure the battery capacity is correct for your usage, you might consider that either the batteries are constantly being damaged in a region with high electrical fluctuations, or they are being depleted rapidly by operating at 100% load.

  • The neutral-to-ground voltage was 2V, but it increased after installing the power supply.

For very sensitive electronic boards, the nominal desired neutral-to-ground voltage is 1V in many places. There are incorrect applications where users assume a power supply will lower this voltage. You can lower this to the desired level by installing a neutral-to-ground regulator at the output of the power supply.

  • Our system received a surge through the grounding even though we have a power supply.

Lightning strikes can be effective within a 1.5km radius after hitting the ground. In power supplies, the grounding line enters and continues to your system in series without any processing. This means the power supply cannot block a surge coming from the ground; in fact, it can be damaged itself. To prevent this, you must use a surge suppressor before the power supply.

  • The UPS works when the grid goes down, but the connected devices do not.

After ensuring the devices are properly connected to the UPS, the circuit breaker or fuse after the UPS (if any) should be checked.

  • The UPS is operating noisily.

The cooling fan might be faulty, or the UPS might be operating under an overload.

As Trimbox, with our surge suppressors, we prevent the UPS and all connected devices from being damaged by lightning and transformer explosions. With our GNDSeries neutral-to-ground regulator, we ensure that the neutral-to-ground voltage in your system stays at your desired value.

Simple precautions sometimes save lives. The best investment we can make for our family, our business, and our environment is protective measures. With Trimbox and GNDSeries, you can be protected from electricity-related damages and electrical contact fires caused by them.
