SURGE ARRESTER WORKING PRINCIPLE

WORKING PRINCIPLE OF SURGE ARRESTERS (PARAFUDR)

Surge arresters are products manufactured to maintain insulating properties up to a predetermined voltage value and to become conductive above that value to discharge the overload from phase to ground.

Surge arresters are produced under three main categories:

High-voltage surge arresters

Medium-voltage surge arresters

Low-voltage surge arresters

High-voltage surge arresters: These are systems used in 154kV-380kV switchyards and energy transmission lines to prevent the effects of lightning from traveling through the transmission line within the grid insulation. Since high-voltage surge arresters already operate at very high voltages, they succeed in protecting systems by blocking overcurrents, even though they do not have separate voltage limiting features.

Medium-voltage surge arresters: These are systems similar to high-voltage surge arresters, used at 34.5kV levels for distribution lines, operating within a different voltage range.

Low-voltage surge arresters: These are protection products manufactured to prevent impulses that may occur in the city grid after the transformer from damaging the end user. Like high and medium-voltage arresters, low-voltage surge arresters do not perform voltage limiting; however, the situation is slightly different here because overvoltages occurring at the end-user level can directly damage systems. Low-voltage (LV) surge arresters are divided into three classes:

Class B surge arrester

Class C surge arrester

Class D surge arrester

Class B surge arrester: Used at the outermost point of the structure before the meter, it has the lowest sensitivity and the highest instantaneous overcurrent transmission capacity. Provided the voltage remains below 2.5 kV (10/350us), it can safely discharge 25kA phase-to-ground and 50kA neutral-to-ground current once. Prices range between 1500₺ and 3500₺.

Class C surge arrester: Installed after the structure’s meter, it provides more sensitive protection by blocking instantaneous overcurrents that Class B could not transmit, directing them to the ground. Provided the voltage remains below 1.5 kV (8/20us), it can safely discharge 20kA current once. Prices range between 300₺ and 1200₺.

Class D surge arrester: Preferred for even more sensitive protection targeting specific electronic products. Provided the voltage remains below 1kV (8/20us), it can safely discharge 6kA current once. Prices range between 150₺ and 400₺.

With new generation surge arresters, you can opt for high protection that offers the power of Class B with the sensitivity of Class D, without being dependent on grounding quality. Furthermore, you can prevent potential risks by damping the overvoltage entirely.

Simple precautions sometimes save lives. The best investment we can make for our family, our business, and our environment is protective measures. With Trimbox and GNDSeries, you can be protected from electricity-related damages and resulting electrical contact fires.
