WHAT IS A SURGE ARRESTER?

In low-voltage systems, products designed to minimize the impact of lightning strikes on electrical and electronic devices are generally called surge arresters (surge protection devices). Surge arresters are designed to complement lightning rods; while lightning rods direct external current to the ground, surge arresters perform this function inside the building by intercepting the excess current before it reaches the system. The reason they cannot provide 100% protection is precisely at this point: while they transmit the excess current, they often fail to prevent the resulting overvoltage (surge) in the system.

Developing its technology based on this gap, the new generation surge arresters designed by Trimbox go beyond old-fashioned arresters by providing overvoltage damping. This prevents device burnouts not only during lightning strikes but also in cases of transformer explosions, neutral line breaks, or phase-to-neutral contact. The system within Trimbox new generation surge arresters also eliminates the need for separate B, C, and D class units by providing Class B power with Class D sensitivity in a single unit.

Trimbox new generation surge arresters have also overcome the common struggle where arresters fail to function properly if the grounding resistance is not at the desired level. Verified by TSE (Turkish Standards Institute) and METU (Middle East Technical University) tests, these units protect systems even in places where grounding is poor or non-existent. Trimbox stands out with its price advantage, a local production rate of 87.84%, and a manufacturing philosophy strictly focused on device protection.

When examining surge arrester tests under IEC standards, the focus is typically on whether the arrester itself survives the lightning strike; unfortunately, there is little concern for whether the devices within the system were actually protected. At this point, we applied to TSE and METU, requesting documentation that our primary goal is device protection. We are now sharing these positive results with the public: in lightning strikes of 15kV, 20kA 8/20 microseconds, and 1.2/50 microseconds, Trimbox protected the devices in the system without sustaining any damage itself.

The desperate need for new generation surge arresters has been proven by the 78% increase in electrical fires in both public and private sectors over the last 10 years. Looking at the most developed countries and systems in the world, this upward trend is evident. The features of Trimbox new generation surge arresters, which close this gap in international standards, should be implemented as the new standard, starting with our country. In this way, we can prevent an annual loss of 2 billion USD in electronic board burnouts and end the loss of life and fires caused by overvoltage.

Simple precautions sometimes save lives. The best investment we can make for our family, our business, and our environment is protective measures. With Trimbox and GNDSeries, you can be protected from electricity-related damages and resulting electrical contact fires.
